Eating For Life

Did you truly enjoy the food you ate today? Do you really like the way you look and feel? Are you consistently enjoying great health and high energy?
Bill Phillips, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Body-for-LIFE, believes your answer to all of the above questions should be, “Yes!” He feels that food should be a source of pure pleasure. A source of positive, abundant energy! A “sure thing” in a world of much uncertainty.
Phillips, who’s widely regarded as today’s most successful fitness author, has firm beliefs which go against the grain of today’s popular weight-loss methods. “Diets, all of them, are potentially dangerous, most always dumb and ultimately a dead-end street!” he insists. “Eventually, anyone and everyone who’s at all concerned with their health must learn how to feed their body, not how to starve it.”
Instead, Phillips encourages a safe and sound solution which includes eating balanced, nutrient-rich meals, frequently throughout the day. “This is what works in the long run,” he explains.
Rich with common sense and science, Eating for Life has rhyme and reason. It is specific. There are very clear dos and don’ts which help people enjoy food and improve their overall fitness.
Bill’s approach, which he calls the “Eating for Lifestyle,” has already helped thousands of people break free from the dieting dilemma and discover that, contrary to pop-culture belief, food is friend, not foe. Used intelligently, it nourishes the body and mind, satisfies the appetite, calms cravings, renews health and lifts energy.
Like Bill Phillips’ Body-for-LIFE, this is a tell-it-like-it-is book. There’s no promise of a quick fix. No metabolic tricks or so-called miracles. Just straightforward, clear, concise, practical and appropriate principles for eating right… for life.

5 Stars Fabulous meals!
I love the recipes in this book. They are easy to make and very flavorful. Thanks!!!
5 Stars Eating for LIfe
The book was in the condition as promised and was mailed to me as promised.
5 Stars Eating RIGHT
I’m starting my 12th and final week of this program, and I just have to say that this program works, period. I consider myself athletic, a good body weight, and active, but I wanted to knock out a few pounds of fat. Not only did I go from 14% body fat to 7% in these 12 weeks, but I also have significantly greater amounts of energy now. I’m the guy who would eat a smoothie for breakfast, sandwich for lunch, sensible meal with my family at night, drink water all day, workout for 3-4 days a week. Even being ‘ideal’ body weight and active according to medical standards, I still improved and feel so much better after reading this and putting it into action. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to feel and look good, and have great long term health.
5 Stars WORTH EVERY PENNY
This book is AMAZING! It has awesome recipes that are really nutritious, are easy to make, and best of all taste GOOD! One of my favorite recipes is the Golden Pancakes. What? Pancakes in a health book you ask…and YES it’s TRUE… I mean where else can you find a pancake recipe as good as this and eat them guilt free! This book has changed my LIFE, hence the title, Eating for Life. Combine this book w/the Body for Life book and workout program and your body will thank you in return by looking hotter, and feeling better than ever! Thanks Bill Phillips for making people all around the world look good while still being able to eat EASY to make, YUM-O meals along the way!
5 Stars Best program I’ve ever done!
I’ve been using the Eating for Life program for several weeks and the results are unbelievable. Finally a program that is based on what we all know - you need to eat right and exercise more. Eating 6 times a day makes a huge difference, especially supplemented with protein. I would also suggest his book Body for Life which covers the exercise part of the program.

5 Stars Daughter LOVES this DVD
Daughter (4 1/2) has been watching me work out to videotapes since she was a baby and wanted one of “her own”. I bought this when she was 3 and she has adored it always. When I pull out one of my tapes, I need to put this on for her on another TV. Yes, it’s “only” jumping moves like the other reviewer said, but this DVD also talks about healthy habits and healthy eating. She is still engaged with it all the way through, and when it’s over she always asks me for a piece of fruit. I think it’s a great way to introduce kids to fitness and reinforces the message of healthy eating that I as a parent always try to stress.
5 Stars Must Have!
This is a great DVD to entertain child. My 23 age child loves it. This DVD keeps child occupied and grabs their attention. You can teach toddler and twos, how to jump. Also your child will learn words from this DVD.
5 Stars A great way to make exercize fun for your kids
Ever since we got “Happy Healthy Monsters” for our son, he has become an advocate of jumping. He’s “jumping” everywhere he goes and invites everyone around him (”Come on Daddy, jump!”) to join in. I am happy to see this, because a few months ago he was a bit on the “lazy” side (perhaps his workaholic parents that stared for long periods at the computer screen were not the best example). So, though we now have a living spring bouncing around the house, that seems to be a good ‘problem’ to have in this world of sedentary and overweight kids.
5 Stars Gets kids to march and jump, eating good foods too.
I remember buying this video when the twins were too little to appreciate it and happened to pull it out again when they were 20 months old. Perfect age to get marching and jumping started. My boys started lifting their legs and moving with the kids. There is alittle Elmo, lots of Grover (who is hysterical) and some appearances by the jumping cow and cookie monster with singing glass of milk. DVD extras with Cookie monster require an older child to know how to use the “select” and arrows on the remote. Singing with India Erie (sp) is okay, and not sure I like the rap with Wyclef, but anything Cookie monster does is funny.
My kids are too young to understand the healthy food stuff right now but they will grow into that part alittle later.
Fun video, I like it better then the Wiggles because Sesame Street touches on more subjects.
5 Stars My kids love this video
My two kids, age 4 and 3, watch this video over and over. It’s really teaching them to get active and eat healthy. my little one is actually asking for healthy foods now! There’s a lot of humor in there for the grownups watching as well (which makes repeat viewing enjoyable for me, too). My kids love to jump along with grover, and they really get a kick out of the slapstick. I’m so glad we got this video!

Food Matters A Guide to Conscious Eating with More Than 75 Recipes

Cookbook author Bittman (How to Cook Everything) offers this no-nonsense volume loaded with compelling information about how the food we eat is doing damage to the environment, what changes to make and why. Authors have covered this topic before (Michael Pollan, for example, in The Omnivores Dilemma and In Defense of Food), but Bittman takes a practical turn by concluding with 77 recipes that make earth-friendly eating doable and appealing. His collection of reliable recipes even includes such meat dishes as Thai beef salad, which isnt meat-heavy, but rather has just the right balance of meat to greens. There are also such staples as super-simple mixed rice; chicken not pie; and modern bouillabaisse. Bittman decries consumption of over-refined carbohydrates, but doesnt leave off without some sweets, including chocolate semolina pudding and nutty oatmeal cookies—suggesting, as the whole book does, that a diet in synch with the needs of the earth doesnt result in a sense of utter deprivation. 4 Stars Dietless
Leave it to “The Minimalist” writer of New York Times and PBS fame, Mark Bittman, to use shortcuts even in his book title to convey multiple messages. Food Matters means both that the food we select makes a difference, and this book concerns food. Following a personal medical wake up call, Bittman chose to make some improvements to his diet along the lines that all of us know when it comes to clarity on what’s good for us: eat more plants, fewer animals, and skip junk food. In a non-doctrinaire manner, Bittman surveys the state of food in America, habits of eating, and offers practical suggestions for making choices that improve health without leading to feelings of deprivation. For those readers who hate being on a regimented diet, Food Matters offers simple ways to buy and prepare good food, including dozens of recipes. It’s simpler than most of us imagine.
Rating: Four-star (Highly Recommended)
5 Stars Caution: This book might make you a vegetarian
Happily I started reading this book while eating a salad in a restaurant. Bittman gives horrifying details on factory farming. The idea that 10 animals have to die every year after unbeleivably bad treatment so that I could have a McDonald’s burger or occasional steak hit me really hard.
The dessert part of the book is the recipes. I’ve used several of them. Like all of his books of recipes, they are easy to use.
Again, if you’re eating a burger, do not read this book.
5 Stars Balance of environmental impact of food choices and pragmatic recipes
Big fan of Micheal Pollan and Mark Bittman and this book is the perfect marriage. Lots of ways to eat better and save money doing it which can be a tough balance. I found the spice mixes especially helpful to flavor rice, beans, etc. - a cheaper, healthier alternative to the boxed stuff.
2 Stars Only informative if you are unfamiliar with flexitarian eating and a whole food based diet
I am a huge fan of Mark Bittman’s work for the New York Times as well as his cookbook How to Cook Everything Vegetarian: Simple Meatless Recipes for Great Food. I also love reading books about topics like food policy, farming’s impact on the economy, etc. Because of this I was really looking forward to this book.
Sadly, having just finished it I can say it did not live up to my expectations. The whole book is focused on the impact of the American diet on everything from health to the environment to animal welfare. Bittman’s premise is that by cutting back on meat products and junk food and sticking to more “whole” foods we can lose weight, improve the environment and more. I like the premise, but my problem with the book itself is that these topics have already been covered by other authors and Bittman doesn’t offer much new insight to the table. If you’ve never read about any of these topics before this may not bother you so much. However, I have found that there are other books on the market that are much more informative like What to Eat, The Way We Eat: Why Our Food Choices Matter, and In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto.
The one difference between Bittman’s book and these is he talks about the impact the cutting down on meat and junk food and choosing whole foods has had on his weight. However, this was such a small part of the book that it wasn’t reason enough for me to pick it over one of the others. He also provides recipes to help the reader follow through with his plan. It’s a good idea, but these recipes are far less interesting than those in his other cookbooks or than those featured in healthy magazines like EatingWell.
The bottom line is this: It’s an okay book if you are new to learning about flexitarian eating and the benefits of eating whole foods. However, there are many books that were published earlier that are much more informative. If you’re interested in it I would recommend checking it out from the library rather than investing the money.
3 Stars Food and its Sources
The first part of Mark Bittman’s book condenses the information in “Omnivore’s Dilemma.” It is well-written, easy to read and has some nice recipes, which I haven’t had time to try. We need to be reminded of the effect of capitalist agriculture on our food and to think better of food not contaminated by chemicals.

5 Stars works great!!!
I’ve been using this for about 8 months now and came back to buy one for a friend. Saw the bad reviews so I thought I would add my two cents worth. I think it works GREAT. I do alfalfa in one level and ‘mixed greek bean’ in the other level. The key is to rinse the sprouts (well) in the morning and then again at night. I’m really satisfied with this product. I bought my seeds from a place in Canada (through Amazon). They took a week to get here but the price was 1/4 of the other places listed.
1 Star also very disappointed
wow, this *is* really cheap plastic. It may work as advertised, but it’s never going to hold up in my kitchen. It’s garbage, really. And the instructions say you need to buy some cheesecloth anyway, so what’s the point? Buy a couple of Ball jars instead.
3 Stars it is what it is
works as advertised, kind of cheap plastic for the price, shouldn’t be over $2.99, but it does what it’s made to do.
1 Star Very disappointed.
I just received my seed sprouter from Hirt’s. The external shipping package was fine, but the internal box was damaged and the sprouter was shattered inside. In other words, someone from Hirt’s was inconsiderate enough to put an obviously broken sprouter in a perfectly good shipping box and send it to me. How thoughtless. I never write reviews, but I had to this time as this is absolutely unbelievable. I will never order anything from Hirt’s through Amazon or otherwise ever again and I hope that those reading this review will beware. I cannot comment on how the sprouter actually works as I was never given the chance and will now go look for another product elsewhere.
4 Stars works well
I’m on my first batch, but after a few days this set seems to work well.
I made the misfortune of buying seeds from Hirts as well. They are horribly expensive compared to other sites.
I got 7 lbs of seeds for another site for the same price I got about 1/2 a lb (maybe) from Hirts.
Buy the sprouter, NOT the seeds.

5 Stars A Must Have
My 16 month old loves Elmo and enjoys this DVD. It is clever and entertaining and teaches little ones about shapes, colors, and healthy food options. There is music and dancing and good story lines in each segment. Very well produced and directed. Entertaining for parents too. I purchased Elmo’s World “Opposites” and “Elmo Has Two” and didn’t like them at all compared to this DVD. Note: we don’t watch any TV and this is the only DVD we watch once per day.
5 Stars Baby loves it and so does dad
Elmo is very funny. Baby loves it and I have to say that Elmo character makes some comments and jokes that only an adult would understand. I find him very entertaining compared to Barney and Tellitubies. I would pick watching Elmo anyday over the other children DVDs.
2 Stars not a hit with the 25 month old
Our 25 month old boy, normally an Elmo lover, just wasn’t into this DVD.
The format is based on a game show. Each segment of the “show” requires Elmo and his friends to find 7 (I think) squares, or pentagons, or whatever shape that segment features, before a mouse climbs to the top of a clock and rings a bell. Elmo and chums meander about Sesame St. finding squares in Cookie Monster’s cookie box, Bob’s button, etc. Periodically, we watch the mouse struggling to reach the top of the clock. Sounds like a great premise. However, for our guy, it flopped.
The announcer is frenetic. There’s a lot of repetitive counting (”How many squares have they found? One. Two. How many more do they need to find? One…two…three…four…five. Five more squares.”) Our little guy demonstrated almost complete indifference to the entire DVD. And he’s an Elmo fan, too!
He vastly preferred Blue’s Clues-Blues Room - Shape Detectives (Note: there is an extremely annoying 10 minutes of preview, which frustrate even him because they don’t continue into shows.).
His taste’s are his own. From other reviews of this product, it’s evident that other kids of his approximate age enjoyed it. For us, it was a poor investment. However, we learned more about his preferred style.
3 Stars Daughter likes it but not her favorite
I purchased this for my 2 year old daughter to help her learn her colors and while she likes it (she likes EVERYTHING with Elmo), it isn’t her favorite. If I had it to do over again, I probably would have skipped it. The program is a little strange in that it is a game-show format and they created the host to be just as annoying as they are in real life. Not so enjoyable to watch and I find my daughter just isn’t into it. Maybe she will be later.
5 Stars love it
I love this dvd and so does my 22 month old son….he always comes to me and asks to put”shapes” on and then watches the whole thing
